I just purchased my first Macintosh computer to work with shareware files. Of course they are distributed compressed and require a program to decompress them. Stuffit by Aladdin Systems, Inc. is the most popular. Unfortunately it too is distributed compressed and can't be installed unless you already have it. I searched the Internet for a solution to this "chicken and the egg" problem and didn't find one.
My solution will offend the Mac purists, but it works as long as you have access to a PC. The following directions will give you a working install disk for Stuffit version 3.5. You will want to download and upgrade to the latest version, but this will get you started.
